I will meet you there”

Online Counselling

Welcome to the world of counselling online.

Online counselling is flexible, convenient and accessible. It has benefits such as eliminating location restrictions and saving on travel time and cost. It’s great for those who travel and move often, those in rural locations with limited counsellor choices, with physical/mobility difficulties, those who have busy schedules and who are comfortable communicating through technology.

Various research has shown that online therapy can often make clients feel less restricted and more willing to express themselves openly as they are in their own environment. My experiences of working with my clients have also confirmed this.

How do you ensure privacy and confidentiality?

As with face-to-face work, privacy and confidentiality is extremely important. I work in a safe and private environment with no interruptions, and for online counselling to be effective, it will be necessary for you to also find a quiet and private space, with no interruptions for each online appointment, so that privacy and confidentiality can be maintained in the work.

I offer online counselling via Zoom, for the additional end-to-end encrypted security it offers. The Zoom meeting links are password protected and encrypted, so it cannot be accessed by anyone who doesn’t have the meeting link.

How do we meet online?

Before our initial counselling session, I will send you a secure Zoom video meeting link. At the agreed time each week, you can simply click on the meeting link, which takes you to the confidential space for online counselling.

What are the ways to prepare yourself for counselling online?

It’s useful to create a moment before and after the session to pause, breathe and ground yourself, and to allow yourself to arrive at and to depart from the counselling space. Some practical tips include:

  • Find a confidential space at home where you can be uninterrupted for the duration of the session.

  • Make sure your device (phone or laptop) is fully charged, WIFI is working properly.

  • Turn off emails, apps and notifications on your device so it frees up spaces and you will not be disturbed during the session.

  • Have things you need such as a glass of water, box of tissue, a comfortable chair, a cushion etc to make yourself comfortable.

Who is online counselling not suitable for?

If you are experiencing extreme suicidal ideation or thoughts, suffering from a psychiatric disorder, or experiencing severe psychotic episodes, substance misuse and/or alcohol addiction, online counselling will likely not be the most appropriate method of therapy for you at this time. Please seek out counselling or psychotherapy in a face-to-face setting in your area or access more immediate care and support from your GP in these situations.
